2008 PPK International Seminar

Bleu and I arrived in Seoul, South Korea on April 1st with Sae Lee, who besides being a great photographer in Los Angeles area, is also the founder of the Korean Professional Photographers. We headed about 2 hours south of Seoul to where we were to be teaching the next 3 days. We definitely arrived first class, as we rode in Mr. Lee's Chairman - a car that is not exported out of Korea. Bleu is still trying to figure out how to get one!

Drake and Bromley Busath from Busath Photography in Salt Lake City, Utah, http://www.busath.com/ were also invited to speak. Drake's father, Don Busath, started their studio many years ago. Don Busath was from the classical era of photography and was from the same generation as Monte Zucker, who I worked with in the 1990s. It was a thrill to meet and learn from Drake and Bromley. They are totally an inspiration!!!

Here is a photo of Bromley, Mr Lee, Drake, President of PPK- Mr Back, Ali, Bleu and Sae Lee.

Alison poses with the guys! On the Far Right is Mr. Kim, who is the CEO of the PPK.
Alison infront of the 5 Flower hotel we stayed in. They use flowers instead of stars for rating.
Bleu and Ali teaching. Thanks, Drake for taking these images.

Sae translating for us...he had a tough job but was amazing...especially translating Bleu's jokes!

Bleu was asked to play soccer in the annual PPK Soccer match. I looked out on the field and remember seeing one player kicking the ball and doing a roll foward- head over heels - and realized it was Bleu! Beckham watch out!
No, really, it was a PPK meeting!!!
On the third day of teaching, Bleu and I taught posing. Why don't I feel like they took Bleu seriously in this photo? :)

Sae Lee, translator extraordinaire....
...And photographer extraordinaire!

Here we are at the end of our class with the PPK Banner. We then went back to Seoul to have about 4 days of fun as tourists!

Our first duty as tourists in South Korea is to find the best tailor in Seoul to make some custom suits for Bleu!
Bleu loved photographing people!
And Ali loved posing with them!
Lotte is the brand name of Hotels, an amusement park, shopping malls and duty free shops. They also have candy with their brand name and food. Pretty much, if you imagine Willy Wonka, Walt Disney, and Macy's having a baby together...you have Lotte World! This Lotte hotel had a gorgeous lobby with beautiful elevators.

Great image, Bleu!
Squid is dried like we dry Beef Jerky...it is really popular to chew on. Bleu LOVED it!! .. ??
And we met these school girls on a Saturday, coming from class. Yes, Korean Kids go to school 6 days a week, and sometimes get out of classes late at night.
We were there during the cherry blossom season. We went to two Buddist Temples...really fascinating to photograph. This one was out in the country.

This is the largest seated Buddah in Asia.

We also went to the Olympic Park in Seoul. There are 100 statues created by artists from all around the world.
The COEX convention center was where the HUGE Photographic tradeshow was at. Bleu and I each bought a cool 4 gig jumpdrive from SanDisc that is unavailable in the US.
Bleu photographed this girl as she was getting her make-up on for modeling at one of the tradeshow booths. In the latter part of our trip, we joined up with the Judges who were flown in from Professional Photographers of America to judge the annual print competition -Kalen Henderson http://www.hendphoto.com/, Kaye Frey, Dave Huntsman http://www.huntsmanphotography.com/, Mary Mannix, Rich Newel, Jr. and Jon Allyn. The President of PPA, Dennis Craft, http://www.craftphotography.com/ also came with his Wife, Lori, and their two daughters. Really NICE people to meet and get to know!

I was honored to be asked to read the print titles as the judges viewed the images. My favorite title translated was a photograph of a father with his newborn baby son. It was translated as "Strange, yet still valuable." I think I can start my own talk radio show now after all the practice speaking clearly into the microphone.

We took some amazing images at the 2nd buddist temple we went to. It was across the street from the COEX. It was in the middle of Seoul, and was such a contrast of old vs new with the cityscape looming over the small, old buildings.
These lamps were amazing to see. We wish we were there at night to see them glowing after dark.

This is the largest standing Buddah in Asia. It was built only a few years ago.
